Noting how expensive attending colleges and universities can be, do you think that the Floating University and its ilk are the future of higher education?

We’re at a very early stage – not even the first innings – as to the evolution of education, but I will give you two models. The simplest is this: introductory economics in the United States is taught 15,000 times every fall and every spring. Now, there has to be one guy who is the best at teaching that. Imagine if we filmed him and gave him to the 14,999 schools that he’s not currently teaching at. The second thing is: in the United States, at least, the cost of higher education has increased, for the last four years, at twice that of inflation.

At first that sounds completely crappy. If you think about it for a moment, all business has to achieve productivity gains; but in education the only way to achieve quality gains is through productivity losses. Instead of one person teaching 30 people, one person now teaches 15. I think that the internet will completely change that.

I don’t think it will change it at the very top – at the Harvard, Yale and Princetons of the world – because their credentials will be worth so much. But just go one rung below and I think there will be massive changes. That said, I still think there will be some value for a residential education. There is a lot that can happen in the dining hall and dorm room.
